I still don't know how to use my camera or what an f-stop is, but I do get pleasure from throwing my camera in the backpack and heading out in the city or countryside spending the day capturing moments in time. However, about 98% of my photos are captured on an iPhone. I started taking pictures at an early age to make up for my abysmal memory. Photos were my memory back then, and they continue to be today.

Posted @withregram • @zoecrooktherapy Patterns. We all have them. But once we recognize what our pattern is, it’s hard to go back. 90% of this process is about awareness. It’s hard to unsee what you’ve seen. Once you’ve acknowledged your attachment wound, it will be harder for you to engage in old patterns. If you don’t know what your pattern is, write a list of common dynamics between you and your ex’s. It will become as plain as day once you are willing and open to see it. .

@nytherapist That desperation to feel chosen is really a calling to choose ourselves. We think it’s about them. We think that if they had the capacity, we would feel free. We think if they just tried harder, healed, listened, we would finally feel seen. So we loosen our boundaries, we disconnect from our needs, we lose touch with our worth, we self abandon and we seek.⁣

What we don’t realize is that in these moments of desperation, it’s not them we are waiting for, it’s us. It’s not their capacity to choose us that needs to shift, it’s our capacity to choose ourselves. When we learn how to honor our boundaries, our needs, our values- we stop seeking, we stop chasing.

We stop self abandoning while we develop emotional attachment. We stop taking other people’s capacity as an indicator of our worth. Because when we become desperate for someone to choose us - it’s never really about them. It’s reflecting a deep need within that we need chose ourselves. #nytherapist

This can happen to fit better into our family systems, into larger societal and religious systems.
It couldn’t be more natural to want to belong and to fit in.

For many generations before our time, we didn’t have to make so many decisions for ourselves.
We didn’t have to go on a quest to find our own partners.
We didn’t feel the pressure to have to choose our own career path and live out our purpose.
We had those things decided for us by our families and our communities.
.
.
Many of us live in a different era now, where we are constantly invited to be authentic, to make the best decisions, to choose the “right” partner, to choose truth-telling and authenticity.
The values of integrity and honor and truth have always existed, they perhaps just didn’t carry this same kind of personal weight.
.
.
Some love stories take place because a person finally feels seen, deeply, and beyond the masks they had to learn to take on.
Some love stories may feel greatly enlivened and enriched when masks begin to fall away, when they become replaced by a deep remembrance of one’s more authentic self.
Some love stories may include the shedding and grieving of many masks, on one or both sides, throughout however long a lifetime is with one another.

Some love stories may encourage and advocate for the shedding of masks, no matter the fears and challenges the shedding brings upon themselves.
Some love stories may come to an end, or feel too challenged by the amount of change that comes when a person steps into the person they truly are beneath the masks.

The present becomes tainted with the past as we approach new circumstances with old wiring. The body remembers and our nervous system stays in a state of being on guard and feeling unsafe. Life becomes about managing threat, coping with problems & ‘making it through’. Enjoyment, pleasure, excitement, joy & connection all get forgotten.

Posted @withregram • @silvykhoucasian I can’t tell you how many relationships I have seen come to an end because one (or both) people involved didn’t know how to acknowledge or take responsibility for their hurtful behavior.
This can be hard stuff to lean into when we haven’t seen it modeled properly for us.
It can be challenging to offer accountability to people if we struggle to sit with and regulate feelings of shame.

Nonetheless, leaning towards accountability is a skill I invite all of us to learn to cultivate more of in our relationships.
Accountability is often the bridge we have to walk across to take us from disconnection to connection again.
It is the entry point that can re-establish safety and trust, when safety and trust have been injured or damaged.

What did accountability look like amongst the adults you grew up with?
How did the adults in your life show accountability towards you?
How were mistakes/hurt feelings repaired?
How did you know when connection and trust was restored?
How were your mistakes approached and held?
How were feelings of shame managed?
What is your experience with offering accountability in your relationships now?
How do manage any feelings of shame, guilt, remorse that can come up?
If you struggle to offer accountability, what gets in the way for you?
What might you be trying to hold onto or protect yourself from feeling/experiencing?

Posted @withregram • @bloomingwithemmy Have you ever had a hard time feeling happy? Or when something good happens you find yourself resisting it, or moving onto the next thing?

This is a normal response when in the past, trauma made happiness fleeting or even unsafe.

If your joy was punished, you learned it’s not safe to have joy.

So this goes out to anyone who struggles with this contradiction - wanting desperately to be happy & present, and finding that whole concept incredibly scary or elusive. I see you.

If you want any advice I’d just say - you can practice experiencing happiness and joy in SMALL ways. And savor that feeling as long as you can. You can practice feeling happy and let your body warm up to it.

You are loved and worthy of good things ❤️

You are resisting your own self and the laws of the Universe, so don’t act confused when there is constant tension within you. Surrender to the dark. Denying the shadow means denying the Feminine. The underworld contains remedies for those who are willing to travel. Darkness does not blind those who have eyes to see. The strange, taboo, mysterious, freaky, maybe even slightly masochistic parts of yourself contain immense creative power. Your strangeness is your medicine.

@youareluminous I wanted to share this truth again because it’s showing up big right now...

Those super “hard to let go of” people aren’t actually due to love as love is free + carries non-attachment, plus you can’t ever lose love because it’s literally in every fiber of all of existence. What these people are are actually embodiments of attachments, conditioning, outdated contracts, fears, obligations, wounds of abandonment, codependency, addictions, loss, betrayal, lack of self-worth, etc. They are patterns that have been running your entire existence, that you learned as coping mechanisms from childhood or how you were “supposed” to connect when you were surrounded by dysfunction & were made to believe you weren’t safe to be who you are. Patterns that have been carried within your lineage, passed down forever overriding everything you’re truly worthy of & it hurts so bad to let go of some people because you’re not really letting go of the person, you’re letting go of something within you that this person represented & triggered for you but that you’re associating with them physically. You’re letting go of all the programming you’ve been running your whole life & lives past that brought this person In. And because you’ve spent so long carrying this wound around, being one with it, you don’t even know what it feels like to be free of it & you’re actually terrified of said freedom. It’s become comfortable & familiar which to your brain equals safety. So just remember this when you’re in the midst of a really hard ending & when youre in something entirely uncomfortable where you keep wanting to revert back to what you know isn’t of service to you anymore, you’re actually being faced with an opportunity to finally evolve, empower yourself & your lineage. Reframe conflict as less about fixing an issue, and more about learning a human. An imperfect human. A wounded human. Imagine if our hearts softened while we had deep interest in learning about their perspective. That while we learn someone, we still can hold on to ourselves. And there is a beautiful healthy boundary protecting two wounded, imperfect souls.⁣

Conflict is rarely something to be fixed or solved (of course sometimes it is). But it’s an opportunity to learn. To see someone, I mean *really* see someone. @nate_postlethwait This is just a reminder that many of us have grown up in environments where speaking of trauma is taboo. We’ve shifted our focus to be what is expected of us, and we move forward burying our stories, assuming that if they were told we would be exposed as shameful, or unlovable.⁣

I have shared the story before that I once had a therapist who looked at me and asked “Do you see your story as shit or gold?” After hearing him tell me he saw gold in my story, it made me more curious of how I had been shaped by not having a safe space to be open.⁣
⁣
I’m not telling you to publicly share information that needs to remain private. I’m not telling you how to do it or when. I’m simply letting you know that your untold story could be a lifeline of hope for someone who believes they are the only one. By us learning to share our stories from a place of confidence, affirmation and self awareness we are creating a path for more stories to be told. When these stories are told and the survivor is affirmed, the shame has nowhere else to go. ⁣
